In 2021, I married my husband, Tristin, in a wedding in Kansas City's Crossroads Neighborhood.

<h2>My name is Rebeca Amezcua-Hogan and I am running to be your next city councilwoman!</h2><h3>I want to work with you to create a Kansas City where everyday people can afford to live, thrive, and grow old in dignity. A city that works for you.</h3>Today, I live in the Westside with my husband, Tristin. We have two dogs (Manny &amp; Mumu) and two cats. (Dash &amp; Bitters)I am the youngest child of immigrants from Mexico that came to America in search of a better life. Like many immigrants, I spent time growing up all over the place and in unstable housing conditions: rural Mexico, the suburbs of Los Angeles and Chicago, and Sedalia, Missouri. I know from first hand experience how important stable, truly affordable housing is.Kansas City is the first place I've ever been able to call home. I moved to 40th &amp; McGee in 2015 (back when rent in Midtown was much cheaper!) and never looked back. It was the first time in my life that I had truly stable housing and I fell in love with Midtown. I worked at Starbucks at 41st &amp; Main (where I met my husband!) and worked my way through college at Park University, where I graduated with a 4.0.Midtown is where I first got involved in community organizing when I was in college. Driven by my own experiences growing up in poverty, I helped in the fight for tenants rights in Kansas City. I organized alongside other renters in favor of the Tenant Bill of Rights that was successfully passed by City Council in 2019, dramatically expanding the rights of tenants in our city.I have spent years on boards serving the public and working towards solutions for those in need. From 2020 to 2021, I served on the Ad Hoc Housing Committee for the KCMO Health Commission focused on Kansas City’s Unhoused Population. Every day working-class people like me, or with backgrounds like me, are all over the city but rarely get to have their voices heard. Kansas City can (and should!) be at the forefront of tackling our nation's housing crisis. While the rest of the nation struggles with this same issue, we should be aiming to build tens of thousands of housing units in our urban core. I believe that housing is a human right and the foundation of many of the problems facing our city.There isn't just one way to get there, but what we are doing now isn't enough.From just 2020 to 2025, rent in Kansas City went up 38.2%. The cost of homes have soared. When people and families can't afford housing, the city, and the city's culture, suffers. Less art, less money for people to start small businesses, more parents away from their kids to work extra hours, and less money spent in local businesses.Housing is a topic that can make people nervous. If the city cares, this work can be done in an intentional way that leaves neighbors happy and our communities stronger.I want us to try everything: municipally-owned social housing, community land trusts, cooperatives, neighborhood specific housing plans, saving our historic housing from demolition by neglect, making it possible to build the historic housing that made our neighborhoods unique, city-backed low-interest loans to allow residents to build granny units (ADUs) that are kept affordable, and much more!You should be able to afford to comfortably grow old in the neighborhood that you love.

A People-First Housing Plan

If we want Kansas City to be a safe and welcoming place to live, we need to take an evidence-based approach to crime prevention and tackle the root causes of crime: poverty, addiction, homelessness, and more. Crime is a serious quality of life issue that prevents us from reaching our potential, that hurts small businesses, and that pushes neighbors out of our city. I know from firsthand experience how frustrating it can be to be in a neighborhood you love and be plagued by crime that disrupts your quality of life.While not a silver bullet, we must take back local control of the Kansas City Police Department from the State of Missouri.
