<p>Too often, the city gets in the way of local business owners in our community. Red tape, slow responses, and poor communication have made operating stores, restaurants, and businesses an even tougher uphill battle.</p><p><strong>Some of the most beloved 4th District small business owners backed Rebeca on day one because they know she will proactively problem solve and support them.</strong></p>

<p>Jason Kander is a U.S. Army veteran, former Missouri Secretary of State, and a nationally recognized progressive leader and advocate on issues of voting rights, mental health, and veterans’ affairs.</p><p><strong>On July 22nd, he endorsed Rebeca Amezcua-Hogan’s bid for Kansas City, MO’s 4th District City Council seat.</strong></p>

<h4>Jason Kander Endorses Rebeca Amezcua-Hogan</h4>

<p>Kansas City can (and should!) be at the forefront of tackling our nation's housing crisis. While the rest of the nation struggles with this same issue, we should be aiming to build tens of thousands of housing units in our urban core. <span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">I believe that housing is a human right and the foundation of many of the problems facing our city.</span></p><p><strong>There isn't just one way to get there, but what we are doing now isn't enough.</strong></p><p>From just 2020 to 2025, rent in Kansas City went up 38.2%. The cost of homes have soared. When people and families can't afford housing, the city, and the city's culture, suffers. Less art, less money for people to start small businesses, more parents away from their kids to work extra hours, and less money spent in local businesses.</p><p><strong>Housing is a topic that can make people nervous. If the city cares, this work can be done in an intentional way that leaves neighbors happy and our communities stronger.</strong></p><p>I want us to try everything: municipally-owned social housing, community land trusts, cooperatives, neighborhood specific housing plans, saving our historic housing from demolition by neglect, making it possible to build the historic housing that made our neighborhoods unique, city-backed low-interest loans to allow residents to build granny units (ADUs) that are kept affordable, and much more!</p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>You should be able to afford to comfortably grow old in the neighborhood that you love.</strong></span></p>

<h2>A People-First Housing Plan</h2>

<p>If we want Kansas City to be a safe and welcoming place to live, we need to take an evidence-based approach to crime prevention and <strong>tackle the root causes of crime</strong>: poverty, addiction, homelessness, and more. Crime is a serious quality of life issue that prevents us from reaching our potential, that hurts small businesses, and that pushes neighbors out of our city. I know from firsthand experience how frustrating it can be to be in a neighborhood you love and be plagued by crime that disrupts your quality of life.</p><p>While not a silver bullet, we must take back <strong>local control</strong> of the Kansas City Police Department from the State of Missouri.</p>

<p>Kansas City is facing serious budgetary issues and structural imbalances that will immediately impact the decisions and options available to the next city council. <strong>Rebeca's experience working inside of city hall and her intimate understanding of the budget will allow her to immediately contribute to creating a more efficient city and minimize the impact of past issues on our neighbors and their priorities.</strong></p>

<h2>Healthy City Finances</h2>

<p>It might not be the sexiest topic, but the incomplete trash and recycling services offered to residents in multi-family buildings has to be fixed. <strong>All residents should be able to have access to regular city trash and recycling services.</strong></p><p>The city must also support residents who want to compost. Composting can<strong> </strong>take pressure off landfills, reduce methane emissions, and sequester carbon in our soil.</p>

<h2>Trash &amp; Recycling Services for All Residents</h2>

<p>The demolition of our neighborhoods (like Valentine and the Historic Northeast!) and historic housing stock (much of it naturally affordable!) by intentional neglect is <strong>unacceptable.</strong> While on council, I will fight against the destruction of our neighborhoods, work with neighbors to have an active understanding of what is happening day-to-day on the ground, and push for legislation that punishes bad actors.</p><p>Allowing perpetual speculation from bad actors on poorly-maintained empty homes and empty lots hurts all of us, leads to more arson and crime, takes from the character of our neighborhoods, and increases your tax burden!</p><p><strong>I will use all the tools in my power to address bad actors in our neighborhoods.</strong></p>

<h2>Fight Back Against the Destruction of our Neighborhoods</h2>

<p><strong>KC Hispanic News published a guest piece by Rebeca on the 11 Northeast-Westside Route Coalition. </strong>Rebeca worked with other neighborhood leaders to build a coalition of organizations to write and co-sign a letter to Mayor Quinton Lucas and City Council outlining the importance of public transit and the 11 Route to their working class neighbors.</p>

<p><strong>If you want a healthy city, you need healthy neighborhoods.</strong></p><p>While on council, I will prioritize<strong> repairing and expanding our sidewalk network</strong> and work hand-in-hand with stakeholders in <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);"><strong>every neighborhood</strong></span>, from the Northland to Midtown and the Historic Northeast to the Westside, to tackle core infrastructure needs and neighborhood specific problems.</p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>There is a reason why so many community leaders have endorsed my campaign, they know that I am committed to actually working with them to tackle the problems facing your neighborhood.</strong></span></p>

<p>Our tax dollars should not support contractors that lower conditions for workers in their industry, when we could be using them to benefit good, local companies that invest in the future of our local workforce. If your tax dollars are going towards a project, you should know that they are being spent properly and towards our local workforce.</p><p><strong>Workers in almost every union in the city have already endorsed my campaign because they know I stand with working-people and will make sure the work done in this city actually benefits the community who live here when the project is done.</strong></p>

<h2>Keep Your Tax Dollars in Our Neighborhoods</h2>

<p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>I will take the climate emergency seriously</strong></span>. I will prioritize investment in clean energy production, entirely reject donations from utility companies, and champion legislation that provides resources to make your home more energy efficient to save you money. As energy bills skyrocket across the state, you know that you'll have a councilwoman who is fighting for you and not in the pocket of energy companies.</p><p><strong><em>PS:</em></strong><em> Make sure you check out my position on public transit, which is a climate issue!</em></p>

<h2>Climate Solutions</h2>

<p>No matter where you are in the city or how you get around, <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>you should be able to safely get to your destination</strong></span>. The city must continue to invest not only in safe streets, we must also expand our commitment to public transit, relied on by so many of our neighbors. Public transit is a public good that has proven economic and health benefits.</p><p>Kansas City should also continue to pursue eliminating <span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);"><strong>ALL</strong></span> traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.</p><p>Rebeca has been endorsed by the bus drivers union and a number of Kansas City's best-known transit experts and advocates who have spent years working towards a future where Kansas Citians can always safely get around.</p>

<p><strong>The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle ran a piece on Rebeca's campaign,</strong> with a focus on the values that drive Rebeca to do political and community organizing work. Rebeca discussed "<em>mipnei tikkun ha-olam"</em>,<em> </em>or ‘for the sake of the betterment of society,’ and a Jewish tradition of engaging in policymaking that is about our collective responsibility to do the work to bring about a more just world, in social and economic terms.</p>
